artist, clothing designer sociologist, writer
sally yërin oh is currently pursuing her interdisciplinary master of arts degree in
cultural analysis, social practice art, gender studies, and asian american diaspora.
she teaches fashion design at harlem school of the arts, freelances as a visual artist and fashion designer, and
works as the program assistant of nyu steinhardt’s department of art and education.
oh's bicultural upbringing informs her exploration of tensions between familial identity and selfhood, korean-ness and american-ness, gender and sexuality, and shame and liberation. she is re-imagining what constitutes “originality” and “authenticity” by shedding preconceived notions of “perfection.” after earning a bfa in apparel design at rhode island school of design, working in the fashion industry fueled her urgency to address its exploitative and un-sustainable nature. while her artwork does serve as allegorical mediums of self-expression, oh's intention to utilize the intersection of art, design, activism, and entrepreneurship to create positive social change is what drives her practice.
